As the spiritual, if not mechanical, successor to the 190 SL, the Mercedes-Benz 28O SL has a clear connection with the legendary 3OO SL roadster. Like its predecessors, the 280 SL borrowed many components from the production sedan that gave this car the strength, stiffness and perhaps the most important, a large six-cylinder engine. From the introduction at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 it was clear that the W113 platform, with a sportcar features wrapped in a luxurious finish, would become a hit.
The W113 chassis has gone through various development phases, including examples with the 230 SL and 25O SL type plates as a precursor to the 28O SL design. With a large 170 hp and 2.778 cc in line six cylinder, disc brakes on four wheels and a good working, independent front suspension, the 280 SL for his time was an even better version. The 28O SL was the definition of a luxury sports car; during the four-year production of this, the most popular development based on the W113. Only 23,885 copies were built between 1967 and 1971, and they remain very popular to this day and therefore popular among car collectors.
